Volkswagen is developing a new VR6 engine to be used in numerous models, and this time around it could feature a twin-turbo setup.

According to a recent report, the German automaker is pushing forward with developing a new narrow-angle V6 engine, with its engineering being overseen by Volkswagen’s new head of engine development, Fritz Eichler. Eichler in the past helped develop the current powerplants found in Mercedes-Benz AMG models.

The new VR6 engine is rumored to use forced induction, with a possible twin-turbo setup as previewed in the Design Vision GTI that was revealed earlier this year at the Volkswagen Worthersee event. In the wild GTI concept, a transversely-mounted twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 featured 496 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. While the new VR6 engine wouldn’t be that extreme, don’t be surprised to see a power output anywhere between 340 hp and 450 hp.

Volkswagen plans to use the new engine in new models in select markets, including replacements for the Passat, Passat CC, a production variant of the CrossBlue concept and possibly a successor to the Scirocco, in addition to numerous commercial vehicles.
